Students Team Up with UR New York to Create a Mural

On June 15, 2011 students from Mr. McNamara & Ms. Caputo’s classes at the Main Site collaborated with Fernando Romero (aka Ski) and Mike Baca (aka 2ESAE) from U R New York to create an inspiring mixed media mural in the artroom. The artists, who are based in Brooklyn, came to visit the classes and spend the day with them, talking to them about their art, their philosophies as artists, teaching them some of the techniques they use in their urban street art. Students learned about silk-screen printing and collaborating on a large mural from the artists.  They took a colorfully painted backdrop and covered it with silk-screened prints, drawings, and graffiti style writing. After a morning of painting and printing, “Mr. Ski” and “Mr. Mike” created original silk-screened t-shirts for each of the students.  The day was capped off with a lively basketball game, moderated by Mr. Anthony. Special thanks to Ms. Kim, who assisted Mr. Ski and Mr. Mike all day, as well as Mr. Seminara, who was on hand for the entire day helping out in the artroom wherever needed.   The mural, which measures 5′ by 10′, provided a magnificent and impressive backdrop during this year’s Moviing On ceremonies.  Link to U R New York’s website here: http://www.urnewyork.com/

  1. Screenprinting was fun. I didn’t know that we needed the hot blow dryer to get the paint dry. Thanks for the great day, Mr. Ski and Mr. Mike.

  2. Dear MST, I love your artwork. You have inspired me to draw when I am feeling down. Thanks for the tshirt and for coming to our school.

  3. Thank you for coming I really had a great time. I wish that you will come back and see us again. I would like to make another project with you guys. Maybe I could draw one of my cars for you. I would also like to make a shirt with you. I had a really good time when we were playing basketball. Mr. Mike’s skills in basketball are better than Mr. Ski’s . Mr. Ski needs to keep practicing. That’s okay. You alright.

  4. I want to come to Brooklyn to see your artwork in person. I want to see your backboard. That’s hot.

  5. I think the artwork is nice because everybody worked on it and helped to create it and put their own ideas in it. I didn’t get to play basketball with you guys, so I want you to come back and play, so that way I could bust you, Mr. Ski and Mr. Mike. Mr. Ski, you are a pretty cool artist. You better come back so that way I can and create more artwork. Mr. Mike your message is in the card. Mr. Seminara, bring them back again. Thank you.
