The art/math enrichment group has been meeting on Monday mornings to work on a race car project. Not just any race cars, but ART race cars! For the past several weeks, they have learned about artists, like Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and many others who have been commissioned to paint cars for the BMW corporation. Recently, they were visited by Home Depot representatives who built the actual wooden models with them. They have also been working on their own unique designs on BMW templates, which they will revise and edit to become the final design on their vehicles. When it is all said and done, they will be building tracks and rams and then – Let the games begin! Watch for updates by checking back on the blog and visiting our display in the main building’s first floor gallery! Response and support of this program has been amazing, and we thank all who have come forward to help with supplies! If you would like to help with this endeavor with a donation to our supplies, visit www.dickblick.com/ara/lists/search and enter The Art of Race Cars in the search box of ART ROOM AID. Our wishlist is open and active until January 31, 2012.

At the close of the final exhibit at the main site, all artists were presented with certificates honoring their accomplishments in visual arts.

On June 15, 2011 students from Mr. McNamara & Ms. Caputo’s classes at the Main Site collaborated with Fernando Romero (aka Ski) and Mike Baca (aka 2ESAE) from U R New York to create an inspiring mixed media mural in the artroom. The artists, who are based in Brooklyn, came to visit the classes and spend the day with them, talking to them about their art, their philosophies as artists, teaching them some of the techniques they use in their urban street art. Students learned about silk-screen printing and collaborating on a large mural from the artists. They took a colorfully painted backdrop and covered it with silk-screened prints, drawings, and graffiti style writing. After a morning of painting and printing, “Mr. Ski” and “Mr. Mike” created original silk-screened t-shirts for each of the students. The day was capped off with a lively basketball game, moderated by Mr. Anthony. Special thanks to Ms. Kim, who assisted Mr. Ski and Mr. Mike all day, as well as Mr. Seminara, who was on hand for the entire day helping out in the artroom wherever needed. The mural, which measures 5′ by 10′, provided a magnificent and impressive backdrop during this year’s Moviing On ceremonies. Link to U R New York’s website here: http://www.urnewyork.com/

Students from Ms. Dieal, Ms. Roche, Ms. DiMeo, Ms. Dickerson and Mr. Knudson’s classes have spent one period per week for the past 6 months working with Mr. Michael Sample of the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Urban Voices Program: A Choral Initiative. The students have learned everything from breathing and voice exercises to Michael Jackson, Ecuadorian folk songs, Mozart sung in Latin, and original composition. As the year winds down, the students reflect on how they have grown and what they have gained. In a few short weeks, they will perform for their families and friends, having gained a new confidence and love of performing. Here they share some of their thoughts.

The performances scheduled for today have been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, but the students will continue to practice the lessons they learned from Mr. Sample and look forward to the time they will be with him again. Updates will be made as information about the performances becomes available. Here are the students’ reflections of their time in Urban Voices and their wishes for Mr. Sample.

Ms Dogery’s class has been busy with creating the latest mural to grace the Very Special Arts Festival at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College. The theme of “See, Go, Learn in New York City” was explored as students reflected on all the ways the arts are alive and well throughout the various sites of P373R. Opting for a street-art inspired express train bursting at the seams with each of the arts, the students designed the mural as our own celebration of what we do in the arts throughout P373R. Could film be far behind?

The VSA Festival runs through May 27th and all murals will be displayed in Albany and then the Queens Museum of Art in January for the 2012 Murals on Parade exhibit.

Last month students from Ms. Dogery and Ms. Dieal’s classes got a rare opportunity to collaborate with a teaching artist from the Whitney Museum of American Art and explore works by artists whose creations integrate letters and numbers. The students met Ms. Melanie Adsit and shared their observations of various works by artists such as Mark Tansey, Glenn Ligon, Robert Indiana, Stuart Davis, and others. Upon visiting the Madison Avenue institution, the students got up close and personal with many works of art and learned how each letter and number included in a work carries deep personal meaning for the artist. Through discussions, role playing, and creative process, they gained new insight into how an artist composes his pieces and the aesthetic choices that he or she makes. On her return trip to our school, Ms. Adsit worked with the students on composition, balance and aesthetic and personal choices and the students created personal abstracted compositions integrating letters and numbers and including a rationale for their decisions. Here they share their experiences:

We are alike; we are different; we are a family. Respect for all, not just for one week, but every day and in every way! Visit our newest mural on the second floor of the Main Building. Each piece is important and tells part of our collective story. Each person, different and unique, is an important, irreplaceable part in the life of our P373 family. Celebrate who we are.

*This mural, which I intended as my “Respect for All Week” project, reflects the students and adults with whom I work each week. It is in no way intended to exclude any member of our family. Anyone wishing to contribute to the mural is gladly welcome and may contact me in the main building for 6×6 inch squares. Mrs. Seminara
